STUDIO CITY—Dietrich Canterberry, 34, and Cordell Shields, 35, were charged with murder on Tuesday, November 1 for their alleged involvement in the beating death of a man at a Holly- wood nightclub. At around 2:30 a.m. on October 30, both suspects were at a Hollywood nightclub near Cahuenga Boulevard when a fight broke out between them and other patrons at the club.
According to the United States District Attorney’s Office, Shields is accused of punching Laporscha Marks in the face, as she attempted to escape in a car. Mark’s brother, Devion Jelkes, was reportedly running after his sister when he was attacked.
Jelkes was taken to the hospital after the attack where he later died. Both men are charged with one count of murder. Shields is also charged with one count of assault. He could face 26 years to life in state prison and Canterberry faces a possibly 25-to-life term.
According to reports, authorities found Jenkins un- conscious at the scene. The case is still under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
The Jelkes family created a gofundme page and released the following statement:
“Devion Lamar Jelkes was one of the most genuine and kind Hearted humans to be put on this earth. Unfortunately, Devion’s life was shortly taken away from him on October 30th,2016 at 2:30am. A dispute gone bad ended the life of such a great person with so much talent. His family and friends have started this gofundme account to pay for his funeral expenses. As much as we all try to prepare for tragedies it’s the ones that happen un- expectedly that hurt the most. Devion touched many hearts with his charisma and personality. He was always willing to help the ones in need. Our hearts are heavy and broken because of this tragedy.”
